Airtel Africa and Starlink have launched a commercial satellite-to-phone service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), giving compatible smartphones a way to connect even when they are outside the reach of conventional mobile networks.

In what is being regarded as Africa’s first commercial deployment of Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile technology, The partnership allows Airtel customers to connect directly to satellites using their existing smartphones, without a satellite dish, special modem or separate satellite phone.

Although the service, for now, supports SMS and light-data applications such as WhatsApp messaging, it opens another frontier for the continent’s rapidly expanding telecom and digital infrastructure. The launch, which follows a partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX, Starlink’s parent company, in December 2025, is expected to introduce more capabilities as the technology develops and receives regulatory approval in other markets.

Before the commercial launch in DRC, the companies tested Starlink Mobile data and messaging services in Kenya in March 2026.

Here’s what satellite-to-phone means and how it can revolutionalize Africa’s digital future. 

Your phone can connect without a mobile tower

A normal smartphone depends on a nearby mobile tower to connect to a network. When there is no tower within range, the phone loses its connection, even if the user has an active SIM and data plan.

Satellite-to-phone technology adds another way to connect.

A compatible phone can communicate directly with a satellite passing overhead when it has a clear view of the sky. The satellite then provides a link between the phone and the wider communications network.

This is different from traditional satellite internet, where users typically need equipment such as a dish or terminal to receive the connection.

With Airtel’s service, customers do not need any specialized hardware. They only need a compatible LTE Android smartphone and an eligible Airtel service.

The technology is still limited compared with ordinary mobile internet. The current service supports SMS and light-data applications such as WhatsApp, rather than activities that require large amounts of data, such as video streaming. 

“By combining Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite technology, we are extending essential connectivity beyond the limits of conventional mobile infrastructure,” Sunil Taldar, CEO, Airtel Africa, said. 

Airtel said Apple devices will also be supported in the future.

The company is offering eligible customers a 30-day introductory trial through the MyAirtel app, after which access will continue through eligible Airtel data bundles.

Satellite connectivity could fill gaps left by mobile networks

The technology could become particularly useful in places where building conventional mobile infrastructure is difficult or expensive.

A mobile network needs physical infrastructure such as towers, fibre connections and reliable power. In densely populated cities, those investments can serve large numbers of people. In remote communities, the cost of building and maintaining the same infrastructure can be much harder to justify.

Moreso, fibre cuts pose a great challenge to the industry. TechMedia Africa, on August 12, reported that more than 5,000 fibre-cut incidents were recorded across Nigeria in the first six months of 2026, with road construction, excavation and other civil works responsible for a large share of the damage, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Satellite-to-phone connectivity offers another option.

Someone travelling through a remote area could potentially send a message without having to find the nearest mobile tower. The same could apply to farmers working far from towns, mining operations, transport and logistics companies, health workers and humanitarian organizations.

It could also provide an additional communications link during emergencies when terrestrial networks are damaged by floods, natural disasters or other disruptions.

For Airtel, the technology means its network can potentially reach beyond the physical footprint of its towers.

But satellite connectivity is not intended to replace mobile networks. In places with good terrestrial coverage, conventional networks will remain the main way people connect to mobile services.

Instead, satellite-to-phone technology could act as an additional layer, extending connectivity into places that are difficult to serve through traditional infrastructure.

Africa still has millions of people outside mobile coverage

The timing of the launch matters because Africa’s connectivity problem is not simply about how many people own smartphones. There are still places where the network itself does not reach.

According to the GSMA’s 2026 Mobile Economy Africa report, about 9% of Africa’s population remains outside mobile broadband coverage, while another 63% live in areas where mobile broadband is available but do not use mobile internet. 

The difference is important.

The 63% represents a usage gap. People may have a network around them but remain offline because smartphones and data are expensive, digital skills are limited or there is not enough relevant content.

The 9% coverage gap is different: these people live in places where mobile broadband infrastructure is simply unavailable.

That is where satellite-to-phone services could have their clearest role.

Building enough towers and supporting infrastructure to reach every remote community remains expensive. The GSMA says mobile operators are expected to invest more than $76 billion in network infrastructure across Africa between 2024 and 2030, showing the scale of investment still required to expand connectivity. 

Satellite technology does not solve Africa’s wider connectivity problem on its own. It cannot make smartphones affordable, reduce data costs or address digital-skills gaps.

That makes Airtel and Starlink’s launch more than another telecom product launch. It is an early example of how Africa’s next phase of connectivity could combine mobile networks on the ground with satellites in space to reach people who traditional infrastructure still struggles to serve.
